Christopher Wimmer, FOUNDING Partner

Chris represents clients in complicated, high-stakes disputes. He advocates before courts and arbitration forums on behalf of individuals and entities operating in the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe, and active in the technology, private equity, financial services, and energy sectors. Chris frequently dedicates time to pro bono matters, including asylum and prison condition cases, and writes on mental health issues in the law.

Prior to founding Emergent, Chris practiced law with renowned firms in New York and San Francisco, including Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP and Friedman Kaplan Seiler & Adelman LLP, focusing on complex litigation. While at Freidman Kaplan, he represented Delphi Corporation in a $2.5 billion lawsuit against its investors. Chris also clerked for the Honorable Jack B. Weinstein of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

Chris received a J.D. from Columbia University and earned his B.A. in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of California, Berkeley, receiving numerous academic honors. Greg Demirchyan, MANAGING Partner

Greg advises technology startups and other early-stage companies. His expertise spans an array of corporate issues, including business structure, finance, venture capital, asset valuation, securities regulation, executive compensation, and intellectual property. Greg regularly writes and teaches on topics relating to venture finance, corporate responsibility, computer fraud, crowdfunding, and the law of the European Union. 

Before joining Emergent, Greg worked internationally as an expert on anti-corruption and legal development efforts, including with the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative. In that capacity, he collaborated with entrepreneurs, government officials, and non-governmental organizations to create a better environment for new businesses. Greg also spent time researching corruption and economic development as a visiting scholar at the Blum Center for Developing Economies at the University of California, Berkeley. 

Greg completed a J.D. at Berkeley and received a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Cornell University. At Cornell, he specialized in political philosophy and wrote his dissertation on the economics of globalization. Greg is admitted to practice law in California. He is a fluent Russian speaker. Peter helps policyholders maximize their insurance coverage. He is an experienced insurance law attorney and is adept at representing and advising clients regarding their insurance policies and claims. Peter also provides counsel on data privacy and cyber liability issues. He holds the Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US) credential from the International Association of Privacy Professionals.

Prior to joining Emergent, Peter spent time at several well regarded insurance law firms, counseling and defending insurance companies in complex coverage and bad faith disputes, and developing the expertise needed to understand sophisticated insurance law issues and litigate effectively on behalf of policyholders. He began his legal career in the New York City office of leading firm Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP.

Seth represents the injured, underprivileged, and under-represented with remarkable results. A trial lawyer’s trial lawyer, he has obtained millions of dollars for clients in settlements and verdicts in personal injury cases, including products liability, vehicular negligence, medical malpractice, and wrongful death actions. In several instances, Seth has ended up obtaining outcomes for his clients that were multiples of defendants’ last, best pre-trial offers. For his efforts, he is regularly asked to speak and write on trial and civil litigation practice.

Prior to joining Emergent, Seth practiced law at the iconic civil rights firm Minami Tamaki LLP, focusing on personal injury matters involving both private and public entities. He began his legal career at O’Melveny & Meyers LLP, an esteemed international law firm, where he concentrated on white-collar criminal defense and intellectual property litigation.

Chi-Ru steers clients through the thorniest disputes. She focuses on capital markets and securities matters, regularly representing financial institutions and their officers and employees in civil cases and handling investigations for them, including those involving structured financial products. Chi-Ru also routinely assists businesses in resolving internal conflicts. Broadly active in the finance community, she is a member of 100 Women in Hedge Funds, belongs to the Harvard Alumni Entrepreneurs, and writes on finance and the law.  

Prior to joining Emergent, Chi-Ru practiced law with several prominent New York City law firms, including Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP.  She also clerked for the Honorable Alan E. Norris of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. These experiences provided her with expansive litigation expertise, encompassing international, white-collar criminal, commercial, intellectual property, and financial services matters.

Chi-Ru holds a J.D. with highest honors from Columbia University, a D.M.A. in Piano Performance from The Julliard School, an M.A. in Music Theory from Yale University, and an A.B. magna cum laude from Harvard University. Johnny assists clients confronting real estate and business disputes.  He regularly counsels and advocates for clients in matters pertaining to condominiums, homeowners associations, and other common interest developments, and frequently represents property owners in boundary and nuisance actions, as well as lawsuits involving broken real estate contracts.  Johnny also routinely handles breach of contract, fraud, unfair competition, and employment actions.

Prior to joining Emergent,Johnny worked with premier law firms in San Francisco and New York City, including Latham & Watkins LLP and Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP, concentrating on complex, commercial, and patent litigation, and representing national corporations, government sponsored enterprises, hedge funds, and foreign companies.  He also co-founded the boutique law firm McLaughlin Yeh LLP.

Johnny obtained a J.D. from Columbia University and received a B.S. in Computer Science from Yale University, earning several distinctions for academic achievement. Joshua Paulson, OF COUNSEL

Joshua provides counsel to those confronting the potential loss of their freedoms. He represents clients facing state and federal criminal charges, challenging violations of their civil rights, and seeking to enforce their international human rights. Joshua has vast criminal defense experience, having assisted hundreds of individuals from arrest through trial and conducted numerous investigations. He is currently a member of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York’s Criminal Justice Act Panel.

Before joining Emergent, Joshua served in the prestigious role of Assistant Federal Public Defender for the Eastern District of Virginia, where he handled a broad range criminal matters, including white collar fraud and international terrorism cases, and developed an expertise in sentencing advocacy and mitigation. He also practiced law with Harris, O’Brien, St. Laurent & Chaudhry, a prominent New York City litigation boutique.

Joshua holds a J.D. from Columbia University, an M.A. in Latin American Studies from Stanford University, and a B.A. magna cum laude from Carleton College. At Columbia, he received several academic awards and was a public interest fellow. Joshua is admitted to practice law in California, New York, and Virginia. He speaks Spanish fluently. Ewa Bindek, Of Counsel

Ewa assists organizations throughout their life cycles.  She provides comprehensive advice to domestic and international entities of all sizes on issues of corporate law, commercial contracting, and corporate finance. Ewa frequently counsels foreign companies entering the U.S. market and regularly advises firms on financing options, including seed, venture, and large-debt financings. She also assists clients with commercial leases and the purchase and sale of real property.

Prior to joining Emergent, Ewa practiced law with Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP, an eminent New York City-based law firm. At Fried Frank, she focused on corporate finance. Over the course of her career, her clients have included commercial banks, private equity groups, non-profit organizations, foreign governments, and companies with small, medium, and large market capitalizations.

Ewa holds LL.M. degrees from Columbia University and the Ludwig Maximilian University, and completed her Maitrise (J.D. equivalent) at the University of Paris.  She is admitted to practice law in New York. Ewa is a fluent speaker of German, French, and Polish, and is conversant in Italian. Jason helps clients navigate challenging landscapes and resolve disputes. He regularly handles matters involving international scope and public policy elements, and necessitating crisis management capabilities. Jason has extensive experience in assisting companies with cross-border operations and compliance, in pursuing international litigation and arbitration, and in rendering opinions on novel and foreign legal questions.

Before joining Emergent, Jason worked with preeminent institutions in the United States and abroad, including WilmerHale LLP, where he focused on international disputes, complex litigation, and regulatory matters, and The Asia Foundation, where he provided general counsel and managed development programs. He also clerked for the Honorable Timothy M. Tymkovich of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit and the Honorable James O. Browning of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico.

Jason completed a J.D. and an M.A. in International Relations at the University of California, Berkeley, and received his B.A. summa cum laude in Economics from the University of New Mexico.
