Emergent Wins Asylum for Guatemalan Whistleblower

For the past five-and-a-half years, Emergent's founding partner, Christopher Wimmer, has represented a courageous young man who dared to challenge the culture of police impunity in Guatemala and was forced to flee his country as a result.  Today, following three days of live testimony -- which explored in detail the Guatemalan government's decade-long campaign of murder, kidnapping, false arrests, death threats, planted newspaper articles, and even pursuit across international borders in response to our client's truthful public reports on police violence and corruption -- the Immigration Court granted his, his wife's, and their children's applications for asylum.

We are grateful to have been a part of this victory, and look forward to our next opportunity to provide pro bono legal services to those in need.  For more on our public interest practice, see hereherehere, here, and here.
